Ministry Notifies Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 Replacing SWM Rules 2016

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, has notified the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 vide Notification S.O. 388(E) dated 27th January 2026.

The new rules supersede the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and have been framed under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The notification follows the public consultation process initiated through the draft rules issued on 9th December 2024.

The revised rules aim to strengthen scientific solid waste management practices, improve segregation, collection, processing and disposal systems, and enhance accountability of all stakeholders including local bodies, waste generators and concerned authorities.

The notification marks an important step towards sustainable waste management and environmental protection across the country.
