Supreme Court Issues Nationwide Directions for Enforcement of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026

The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, while hearing Civil Appeal No. 6174/2023 and connected matters concerning the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, issued significant nationwide directions for effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026.

The Court observed that although partial compliance with the earlier SWM Rules, 2016 has been achieved, substantial gaps still remain in waste segregation, processing, disposal, and management across the country. Emphasising that the right to a clean and healthy environment forms an integral part of Article 21 of the Constitution of India, the Court highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action by governments, local bodies, elected representatives, institutions, and citizens.
