The Government of India launched the National Nutrition Mission or POSHAN Abhiyaan with the objective of a multi-ministerial convergence mission to ensure attainment of a malnutrition-free India by 2022. It calls for creating synergy and linking the schemes of other key departments through convergence mechanism to achieve a common goal. The National Rural Livelihood Mission is promoting kitchen gardens as part of farm livelihood intervention strategy for National Nutrition Mission, to combat malnutrition by promoting healthy eating and improving agro-ecological practices. Households are encouraged to develop vegetable gardens, and data shows increase in consumption of vegetables, improved dietary diversity and generation of income.
The government of Arunachal Pradesh has already initiated the cluster farming and the nutritional kitchen garden schemes to lessen our dependence on other states for vegetables and livestock. The cabinet in its sitting on May 29, 2020, approved development of 2000 kitchen gardens per Assembly constituency under the fourteen Finance Commission grants for self sufficiency and nutritional needs base during current financial year 2020-21.
